Abstract

Pneumonia is a global health problem that makes Indonesia one of the countries with the highest pneumonia burden in the world. Based on Riskesdas data for 2018, the prevalence of pneumonia based on diagnoses by health workers increased to 2% compared to before. One of the efforts made by the Government to reduce morbidity and mortality due to pneumonia is to increase the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding nationally. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of pneumonia in toddlers. This study used a cross-sectional design. The research sample was 5,219 children aged 7–59 months. Data collection used secondary data from the 2017 IDHS. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of pneumonia in toddlers (p-value = 0.112). It is hoped that service providers will be able to increase public knowledge of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding through counseling or outreach regarding the prevention of pneumonia in children.
